Background
Benzodiazepines have anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant, sleep-inducing, and in some cases anticonvulsant properties. Due to their central nervous effect, they are classified as psychoactive substances and are, therefore, sometimes used as psychotropic drugs. Lorazepam, diazepam, and midazolam are on the WHO’s list of essential medicines.
All benzodiazepines bind to GABA receptors, the most important inhibitory receptors in the central nervous system. Due to their effectiveness and favorable side effect profile, they have a high potential for dependence. A rapid development of tolerance is also possible, which is why long-term treatment is generally avoided.
